Port Taranaki is highly valued as a recreational facility. Not only does it offer the sheltered Ngamotu Beach, but also picnic and play areas where visitors can park and watch the port in action.

The lee breakwater is heavily used as a base for fishing and pleasure boating. There are excellent facilities including a substantial mooring area and space for parking of vehicles and trailers.
A special jetty has also been built for use by youngsters fishing for sprats.

The increasing popularity of the lee breakwater as a place to visit is reflected in the growth of various tourist attractions ranging from  a restaurant, and a business offering cruises out around the offshore islands where seals bask and play.
