Hi, and welcome to "Tramping With Trev" and welcome to this awesome web site. I know that there are many publications available with similar information, but having the information on a web site makes it available world wide. The intention to to inform you the traveller  about our numerous walks and short tramps close to our three main access points (North Egmont, Stratford Mountain House and Dawson Falls), all within short range of New Plymouth, Stratford and Hawera, the three main towns. Out to Kaiauai Hut and Return If you are interested in visiting some of the DOC huts that are in the North Egmont area then the Kaiauai and the Maketawa are the most accessible. The Kaiauai Hut can be reached in about 1hour 45min from the Kaiauai car park. The car park is on the right, ¾ of the way up Egmont Road from the park entrance. There is a swing bridge 30min from the road which adds interest to the tramp. The Kaiauai hut is one of the smallest huts on the mountain and only sleeps 4 persons. This hut does not get much use as most trampers continue on to the Pouakai hut.        EMAIL TREV  Top Tracks website, with in-depth information regarding all day tramps around the mountain and within Egmont National Park..   Email Martin

Maketawa Hut Loop The nearest hut to North Egmont is the Maketawa. This DOC hut is larger and sleeps 16 persons. A good loop tramp via this hut can be achieved in 2hours 20min. Follow the summit road for 40min until you reach the base of "The Puffer". Take a hard left and follow the ridge back down the mountain to the hut. You will see the hut as you make your way down the ridge and you will soon meet the Maketawa track just before the branch off to the hut. Have lunch at the hut then make your way back to the Maketawa track. Follow this track back down the mountain and, after some 1hour 10mins you will exit at the lower car park. .Top Tracks website, with in-depth information regarding all day tramps around the mountain and within Egmont National Park.
