An Evening in New Plymouth

In the shadow of the mountain on a Taranaki shore
In the calmness of a summer night that stilled the ocean’s roar
A kaleidoscope of colours ‘neath a starlight-gilded dome
Kissed the breathless glow of moonlight in a place so far from home.

In the memory lies an evening time will surely not erase;
Nature’s glory thus reflected by the incandescent rays
Brings alive the floral orchestra - a choir within the dark
Happy voices cross the water there in Pukekura park.

Softly pastel come the colours as they dance within the trees;
How immortal is the Architect of portraits such as these!
See the vibrant, flowing contours of the petals and the leaves...
Hear the murmur of the waterfall... such tapestry it weaves!

On the seafront lay the boulders in their long majestic line
Silent guardians of the City as her people they enshrine.
And along the walk, the stony sculptured carvings stand forlorn
As the rolling song of lapping surf awaits another dawn.

Many hands will feel their textures, many tongues will sing their praise
Whilst the baton of the wind-wand will direct them as she sways
To the ever-changing rhythm of the symphony that lies
In the music of the heavens and the karma of the skies.

Yet ‘twas friends of my own choosing, by their grace and warm goodwill
Made the magic of the evening so much more delightful still!
No more special could one blossom, or one star or moonbeam be
Than these kindest flowers of friendship... who did show such grace to me.
