So what exactly does permaculture mean, if you split the word up you end up with

Perma  - Permanent      Agriculture -  Permaculture  -  A sustainable food growing system.

So if you were to wander into the forests of the Amazon, you would be standing in the middle of Permanent Culture  it lasts forever using mother nature, of course I am using a mere example here of trying to make it understandable that if all things are done naturally in in harmony with nature then it will last year after year, however if you plant a garden, by way of turning the soil, just applying chemical fertilizer then you are in fact working opposite to permaculture.

Permaculture is all about utilizing land and creating a sustainable area whereby plants, waterways, in fact everything works in harmony, that does not mean chemical fertilizers, or destroying the land like we do today, it actually means that with correct  composting methods, correct planting of trees and shrubs and ensuring that you work the land so that water is retained to the maximum, - you are actually doing what nature does all by herself. Mostly though Permaculture means dedication and return to all things in harmony, including your own state of mind and how much you love our Earth. .

Here is a website that you can visit so you can get an overview on how permaculture works
