| Chervil HERB | Annual | Plant in summer | ||||||||||||
| MY GARDEN CALENDAR | A delicate little aromatic sweet herb, used a lot in some places in egg and cheese dishes, Chervil enjoys a damp, partial shade spot, it can be difficult to grow under dry sunny conditions, rich organic soil is needed the leaves need to be picked frequently to stop plant bolting to seed and encourage new growth, many confuse chervil with parsley, the leaves have a slight anise flavor and the curlier the leaf the stronger the flavor, a favorite for some who use this herb for garnishing salads, can be grown indoors,hates long hot dry summers | |||||||||||||

| Chinese Cabbage | Annual | Plant early spring and late summer | ||||||||||||
| Chinese cabbage is quite a large plant, requiring a good 30cm round per plant, excellent in salads and cooking, Plant very early spring or late autumn, so you catch the colder weather, Chinese cabbage does not fare well in really hot weather, requires a well composted rich soil very similar to Brassica's, very easy to grow from seed either in punnets or straight into drills [long trenches] then thin out. |

| Chives HERB | Perennial | Plant in Summer. | ||||||||||||
| You can grow chives from seed, or alternatively break up a clump from a friends patch, most nurseries sell chives, Garlic Chives are also available. Chive seeds only take about 7 days to germinate, but they are delicate, just like baby onions. Chives love organic soil and thrive in full sun, I would not be without chives they are a wonderful addition to salad sandwiches or salads, fantastic in egg sandwiches, a must for any garden. Each year the clumps multiply so its great to divide and give away, watch out in Winter if the weather is really cold the chives will disappear, but they soon shoot up in warm weather. | ||||||||||||||

| Courgettes - Zuchinnis | Annual | Plant in Summer | ||||||||||||
| You can sow your seeds from early September but don't plant out until late October, plants must be at least 60-70cm apart, a well drained soil is needed with a moderate amount of compost forked in before planting, the earlier the courgette is cut the nicer the flavor, the earlier you pick the fruit the longer the plant produces, if you let too many courgettes grow too big it then exhausts the plant and you get less fruit, chemical fertilizers really cut down the production of courgettes so they grow wonderfully well in an organic garden. I stake my zucchini up with bamboo so it grows high, as opposed to along the ground, which helps to prevent mould, another use for bamboo I will provide an image at a later date, watch the garden calendar pages. | Coriander | Annual | Plant all year round. | ||||||||||||
| Corianders best growing time is winter so get your seeds germinated late summer early autumn and you will have prolific leaf growth, no flowers, if you grow coriander in summer and the weather is hot then it will bolt to flower and seed very quickly, always leave one summer plant to go to seed anyway for seeds, sow the seeds straight into the ground at about 2cm deep and sow frequently, I put about a dozen seeds down, you can always give away baby plants to friends. Grow in full sun, keep moist and make sure soil is well fed for good leaf growth. Coriander is a taste you will either love or hate, if you love it you will not be able to do without it. Actually Coriander is the kind of plant that if you just chuck heaps of seeds on the garden some will grow, I know a Thai woman who has done that for years and she always has coriander, she lives in New Plymouth. | ||||||||||||||
