Kumara sweet potato      Tuber Annual                  Plant October/November
 MY GARDEN CALENDAR
  1. Purchase slips from a reputable nursery, Prepare ground well in October/November  so you have a light sandy well fertilized loose soil and solid sub soil in a very sunny position. so you are looking at solid bottom and a loose sandy top soil email me if you don't understand,
  2. Plant the slips about 75mm deep, allow about a 1meter circle around that plant for the foliage growth to spread into a dense mat, the foliage mat will keep wanting to root at the nodes, but you must keep lifting the foliage and re positioning it back down so it cant root into the ground, this is vitally important, at no time can the foliage root into the ground, if it does  - lift it.
  3. Plants take about 6 months to mature and should be ready about April to dig up, ensure this is done with a fork to prevent damaging the kumara, if the fruit is damaged too badly  it will simply rot away and wont heal during the drying process.
  4. Dry the kumara in the sun for a couple of days, till it looked cured, that means little marks or scratches are dry and healed and skin looks thickened,  then pack the kumara in dry sand or soil, as many as 30 kumara can come from one plant.

 soil preparation
compost making
liquid fertilizers   Leeks Annual   Plant around Xmas time.
about permaculture   Sow seeds in seedling punnets then pots around September and plant in ground around Xmas time, ensure plants strong and about 20cm tall.  when planting ensure they are buried about 10 cm [half the depth of the plant] deep, make the hole and place the leek in then water the soil in around the roots and base of plant, cut back tops if they are straggly and not standing, ensure the soil is very rich and continued layers of organic soil is put around the base of the plants, the more food the better, plants can be dug up and used during the following winter as required. a great plant to have in the garden for winter, handy for soups and stir frying and casseroles etc. leeks love the sun and good watering and due to size grow them at the back of the garden so they don't block sun to other plants.

Lemon Balm Perennial   Plant any time of year.
A herbaceous perennial grown from root division or cuttings, likes rich soil, plenty of water, full sun, cut and use scented leaves in Tea, cool drinks, or in pot-pourri for a lemon scent, however once the leaves are picked and dried they lose much of their scent. A popular herb in the past with tiny white flowers in summer     grows to about 50cm tall.   Note: Contrary to popular belief, herbs do not like to grow in pots, if you want to have herbs then make a designated herb plot, herbs are fantastic growing plants, attractive and make a great contribution to the garden, so don't make them suffer confined to pots unless the pots are large and filled with great organic compost and fertilizer, placed in full sun, watered and loved....

Lettuce Annual   Plant all year round
I sow lettuce seed all year round, straight into the soil, 1cm deep, they germinate extremely quickly most of the year, 3 or 4 days and they are up,  mid winter if I must germinate I do it in my potting shed or on top of the fridge. I mix all the types of seeds together in one container so that a variety comes up every time. Lettuce likes food, the more food the better for leaf growth so ensure soil is rich and grow lettuce in full sun, at no time should an organic garden be without a selection of full grown beautiful lettuces, I plant seedlings close together at first then as lettuces become ready I lift and replace them with half grown plants, check my Dec garden calendar after the  7th to see what I mean.
